Dramatic surge in New Zealand property searches following Trump’s win

New Zealand property searches have surged dramatically following Donald Trump’s election win. Property searches on realestate.co.nz from US-based users spiked by 123% on the day following Trump’s victory (7 Nov.), compared to the previous day, marking one of the highest single-day spikes recorded from the US this year.

“This level of interest from the US is remarkable,” said Vanessa Williams, spokesperson for realestate.co.nz.

“The decision to move countries is deeply personal, but the scale of this reaction suggests that New Zealand is increasingly attractive in politically turbulent times.”

In fact, the interest in New Zealand began increasing in the weeks before the election. In the two weeks before the election result (25 Oct.– 7 Nov.), users from the US increased by 36.6% compared to the preceding two-week period (11 October – 24 October). Since the result (7-10 November), US-based users on realestate.co.nz have increased 159.4% vs. the same time last year.

The highest search activity came from Democratic-leaning California and Virginia, both voting for Kamala Harris. In California, searches surged by 96.6% year-on-year, while Virginia saw a 30.9% increase, supporting the idea that the political landscape may be prompting some to explore their options abroad.

“Both the timing of the election and the lift in searches from Democratic-leaning states, California and Virginia, suggest US politics are a factor. New Zealand offers a unique lifestyle that clearly resonates with those seeking an alternative,” said Williams.

Overall Google searches in the US for leaving the country surged by a massive 1,514%, reflecting a growing interest among Americans in relocating to foreign countries, including New Zealand after Trump’s victory in the 2024 Presidential elections, according to VisaGuide. World.

Heightening interest in New Zealand is also reflected in that “Moving to New Zealand from the US” query on Google saw an incredible 7,600 % increase, making it the highest searched term during this period, and “Immigrate to New Zealand” gained a 1,566 % rise, according to this report. Other destinations that experienced notable spikes in search traffic included Norway(437%), United Kingdom (375%) and Ireland (355%).
