Dust off your bike, join the springtime fun – Biketober is here

Biketober is here – so dust off your bike, pump up the tyres and join the springtime fun to share your love for cycling.

Biketober is the ultimate grassroots celebration of bikes and cycling throughout October. This month-long celebration is of all things bike, with events for all ages and abilities. The festival aims to encourage the community to get on their bikes, give it a go and strengthen their love of cycling.

Whether you’re riding to school or work, exploring the shared path network in the city, or just keen for a fun day out, there’s something for everyone.

Community-led events in Biketober takes place in Hamilton and other parts of Aotearoa New Zealand, including Auckland, Christchurch, Otago, and Queenstown, as well as internationally in countries places such as Australia and America.

Biketober is also about giving more people access to fun experiences on bikes, which will encourage more people choosing to cycle for their transport, and make use of the numerous cycleways and trails build, for example in Hamilton.

Hamilton City Council has arranged various Biketober events in the city during this Biketober month.

Time to show your love for cycling

There is an event for young riders- primary-aged children, who want to learn how to ride a bike and parents are not sure where to start; student bike maintenance workshops to learn how to give your bike a safety check and how to complete basic repairs; and various bike-themed arts and crafts, face painting and badge making activities at the Glenview and Chartwell libraries, etc.

You can also collect a bingo card from a Hamilton library and earn stamps to go into the prize draw. All you have to do is to hop on your bike with your whaanau, visit the locations on the card, snap a photo of yourself, your helmet or bike and show it to library staff to earn a stamp. Those with the most stamps will be in to win prizes.

On October 4, you can also celebrate the recently completed shared paths connecting Lake Domain Drive and the Western Rail Trail. Click here for full details of all local activities.

Those who are “fit and confident riders” and/or ride e-bikes, they can Biketober ride from Hamilton Gardens to Karapiro (& back) on the Te Awa River Ride on October 12. Click here to know more of this ride.

What better excuse do you need to have some springtime fun with friends and families?
