The Fickling Convention Centre venue in Three Kings, Auckland was filled with laughter, learning, and meaningful connections on 7 June 2026 for the event “Generations in Play: Reviving traditional Indian games & stories”.
Hosted by the Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust – one of the largest multi-ethnic South Asian Group in Auckland, the event was designed to reconnect families through culture, storytelling, and traditional games.
The event brought together three generations – grandparents, parents, and grandchildren in a unique shared experience that celebrated the richness of Indian heritage.
Throughout the day, grandparents shared cherished childhood memories and traditional stories, offering younger generations a glimpse into the values, experiences, and traditions that shaped their lives. Children, in turn, delighted the audience with a lively enactment of the classic tale The Monkey and the Crocodile.
A highlight of the event was the hands-on cultural activities. During stitching and embroidery sessions, grandparents enthusiastically passed on skills learned in their youth, while children eagerly tried their hand at traditional crafts. Henna art added colour and creativity, with participants of all ages joining in.
The event truly lived up to its name through the revival of traditional games. The elderly taught children how to play games they once enjoyed growing up, including kho-kho, kanche (marbles), and stapoo (hopscotch). These activities transformed the venue into a vibrant space where stories, skills, and traditions were shared naturally across generations.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, grandmothers and grandchildren performed together on stage to the much-loved song “Daadi Amma, Daadi Amma, Maan Jao” (“Grandma, Grandma, please give up your anger”) drawing a big applause from attendees.
In an era where digital entertainment often replaces face-to-face interaction, “Generations in Play” highlighted the enduring value of bringing generations together and spending time together. The event demonstrated how traditional games and storytelling can strengthen family bonds, preserve cultural heritage, and create lasting memories.
The programme concluded with refreshments, photographs, and heartfelt conversations, leaving participants with a renewed appreciation for the importance of intergenerational connections.
