Indian nationals constituted the largest number of migrants to New Zealand in the year to July.
Net migration of Indian nationals who changed their county of residence to New Zealand during this period was 41,100, according to figures released by Stats NZ.
Number of migrants from two other Asian countries – Philippines and China were behind India at 24,600 and 23,600 respectively.
During this period, a total of 25,200 New Zealand citizens also returned to their country.
Net figures of Indian migrants have increased steadily in recent years, but the growth has been significant especially in the last five years.
From net Indian migration of 8,199 to New Zealand recorded in the calendar year to July 2019, this number substantially increased to 33,692 in the year to July 2023.
These numbers further grew to 36,972 in the year to July, but the migrant numbers from India have actually declined in the past six months.
In the year to January, approximately 51,000 Indian migrants arrived in New Zealand with monthly figures declining to 48,000 in the year to April and 43,200 in the year to June.
In the year to July, 4,100 Indian citizens also departed from New Zealand.
