Scammers have attempted to gain access to New World Clubcard accounts and initial investigations suggest some accounts may have been accessed without the cardholders authorisation. New World’s systems, however, have not been breached.
New World has issued this alert to all their Clubcard members in an email and by way of notification on their website. The supermarket is also informing customers individually if their account was affected.
According to investigations carried out by New World’s technology team, there was suspicious external activity where scammers attempted to gain access to accounts by trying commonly used passwords across many usernames. Based on their investigation, it appears that some Clubcard accounts with weaker or reused passwords may have been determined by scammers and accessed or compromised.
As a precautionary measure and in line with best security practices, New World is recommending all Clubcard members to reset their password. This can be done by logging into your account.
New World advice is to use a more secure password version and recommends using longer passwords (at least 12 characters) as these are harder to crack. Mix character types, Include uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and at least one symbol.
You should not use easily guessed words like ‘password’, ‘123456’, or ‘qwerty’, and never use personal information such as names, birthdays, or addresses as these are easy to guess.
Don’t reuse passwords across different accounts. If you use the same password on other services, it is strongly recommended changing those as well.
The supermarket is assuring their Clubcard holders that urgent steps are being taken to protect and monitor for any further malicious activity and their team is working closely with cyber-security experts to ensure your data remains secure.
