Over 30,000 people join Auckland’s Round the Bays fun run event

Almost 30,000 people of all ages and abilities participated in Southern Cross Round the Bays fun run series in Auckland yesterday, Sunday 2 March.

Thousands of energetic and enthusiastic participants -including children, kicked off the fun-run event on Sunday morning from Quay St (Britomart) in the central city to Saint Heliers beach. David Seymour was also among those who took part in this epic event.

The 8.3km route along Tamaki Drive was filled with walkers and runners, and some were seen pushing toddlers in prams, and there were some in wheel chairs also. There were entertainment groups along the route to keep up the vibes and energy of runners. There were also water stops to keep participants hydrated.

Theme this year for NZ’s funnest fun series, was Superheroes – dress as your favourite superhero, and there were quite a few who lived up to the name. There were prizes up for grabs for the best-dressed runners.

No matter the pace of participants – run, walk or roll to the finish line, they received the finisher’s medal for free.

This was the second leg in the first-ever three-city Round the Bays series, following Wellington last month and ahead of Christchurch’s inaugural event on March 30.

Members of several clubs, associations also joined the event and helped raise over $300,000 for 120 charities.

The ‘fun run’ event was first started in 1972 with 70 participants, by Auckland Joggers Club (AJC) President, Eric Woods, and Auckland’s Mayor and AJC founding member, Colin Kay. Since then the core bones have not changed.
