PM, Mayor mourn death of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II

Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II has died, aged 96, and her eldest son, Charles is now King.

Buckingham Palace confirmed her death early this(Friday) morning. In a statement released by the Royal Family, the Queen died peacefully at Balmoral where she was placed under medical supervision.

With the death of the Queen, her eldest son Charles,73, automatically becomes monarch, even though the coronation might not take place for months.

The new King now becomes New Zealand’s new Head of State.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has expressed New Zealanders’ deep sadness at the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, describing Her Majesty as a monarch with an unwavering sense of duty.

“I know that I speak for people across New Zealand in offering our deepest sympathy to members of the Royal Family at the passing of the Queen. To us she was a much admired and respected monarch, to them she was a mother and grandmother,” Jacinda Ardern said.

“The Queen was a much loved and admired monarch, whose record reign of 70 years is an absolute testament to her, and her commitment to us all. She was extraordinary.

“People throughout the world will be feeling an acute sense of loss at this time and New Zealanders most certainly share that grief. The Queen was a much respected constant through unprecedented global change.

“The Queen visited New Zealand on ten occasions, with that notable first tour over the summer of 1953-54 when she and Duke of Edinburgh visited 46 centres and attended 110 functions”, Ardern said.

Meanwhile, Hamilton Mayor Paula Southgate said the Queen was a compassionate, intelligent leader who had positively impacted millions of people around the world throughout her life of service.

“She was an extraordinary women, full of grace.  She led with poise and with dignity and has been a presence our entire lives,” Southgate said.

“She was a woman who in many ways defined our age. She will truly never be forgotten.”

“On behalf of the city, I extend our very sincere condolences to her family who are grieving the loss of a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother,” Mayor Southgate said

Flags will fly at half mast to mark Her Majesty’s death.

Elizabeth was born on April 21, 1926 and reigned for 70-years, and was also the oldest British monarch ever.
